Old Montenegro Tour: The Route Through History
The day begins with a panoramic drive from Kotor to Njeguši. Constructed in the late 19th century, the road immediately immerses us in history. Plus, going from 0m to 1,100m in 25 serpentines is a thrilling experience in itself. The stunning views along the way are picture-perfect. So, grab your cameras and take photos of the sparkling Bay of Kotor.
As a culturally rich town on the territory of old Montenegro, Njeguši is covered in a veil of astonishing stories. You’ll learn about the Petrović dynasty, as this is the place of their birth.
But, of course, it’s not all about the stories. There’s something in actually experiencing the culture. And, you get the opportunity to do that on this Old Montenegro tour by tasting local products, including cheese, smoked ham and grape brandy. So, Kod Pera na Bukovicu, a 136-year-old family-run restaurant in Njeguši, is a spot we cannot miss. Especially not since the host will take us on a smokehouse tour. Thus, in addition to trying local products, you’ll get to learn how some of them are made.
From Njeguši, we follow a scenic mountain road to Cetinje. As the old royal capital of Montenegro, Cetinje is the center of history and tradition. Walking through the town, you get to experience its authentic architecture, and marvel the abundance of historically important buildings. Also, the walking tour around Cetinje will finally make it clear why the town has been dubbed “museum city”.
On our way back to Kotor, we take a new route, passing the coastal town of Budva. And, a new route offers new scenery, and new photo opportunities.
Walking to the Finish
Our Old Montenegro tour ends with a walking tour of the Old Town of Kotor.
This guided walk takes you through all the major architectural and historic landmarks in Kotor. And, as a marvelously preserved medieval city and a UNESCO World Heritage site, it certainly has a lot to offer.
